Pierce County to receive $70,476 firefighter grant to purchase gear

Pierce County will receive a $70,476 grand to purchase much needed turnout gear for local volunteer firefighters.

County Fire Chief Santo Niño announced the receipt of the grant at last Tuesday’s commission meeting.

The $70,476 in matching grant funds will come from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA’s) Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG). The county will have to provide a match of $20,000.

Niño told the commissioners the funds will be used to purchase 20 complete sets of up-to-date firefighter turnout gear.

Niño said the new turnout gear will ensure that all of Pierce County’s 66 volunteer firefighters will have adequate and safe equipment to work with.

Fourth district Commissioner David Lowman commended Niño for his work.

“We appreciate your efforts in securing these funds for our firefighters,” he said.
