School Supt. gets contract extension

School superintendent Dara Bennett was given a three year contract extention at last Monday night’s school board meeting.

Bennett’s current contract was due to expire June 4 of this year. The new contract will run through June, 2026.

“We (the board) think it is important to have our superintendent in place as we begin preparing for the next school year,” said Board Chairman Duward Boatright.

Boatright had said last month after Bennett’s performance evaluation was completed, that the superintendent received high marks. By law, the results of the evaluation are kept confidential.

Board members expressed their appreciation to Bennett for her leadership over the last three years.

“You have led us through a very tough and difficult time,” said second district board member Mitch Hall.

Hall referred to the difficulties and challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, which began just as Bennett started her tenure as superintendent in April, 2020.

Prior to being named as School Superintendent, Bennett served as principal at Pierce County High School for seven years. She served as assistant principal at PCHS for 10 years and as an assistant principal at Hoboken Elementary School prior to that. She began her career in education as a science teacher at Brantley County High School in Nahunta in 1994.

She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Valdosta State University and an educational leadership degree from Nova University.

Bennett lives in Blackshear with her husband, Cary Bennett.

The Bennetts have one daughter, Cara Bennett, and two granddaughters, Chloe Lynn and Zoe Lynn.

She is a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.
