Fundraisers are being held to assist a Pierce County minister who was shot recently in Jacksonville, FL as he tried to witness to a family member.
Jimmy “Jay” McGauley Jr. was shot after he got into a disagreement with his cousin, Ke’Shawn NeSmith, after they attended a funeral for another family member.
McGauley’s injuries are serious and he underwent surgery recently in Jacksonville, FL. He is expected to survive, but recovery will take a long time and he will be unable to work.
Family and friends have set up a Gofundme Campaign to support McGauley.Fish and BBQ Ribs dinners will be on sale and a benefit yard sale will be this Saturday, Feb. 4 at 3040 Cherry St., Blackshear. Police have determined NeSmith became angry and shot McGauley during a discussion over heaven and hell. NeSmith reportedly didn’t believe in God andMcGauley was trying to witness to him according to the police report.
Family members detained NeSmith until police arrived.McGauley has said he forgives NeSmith.
According to Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, NeSmith is facing charges of attempted murder and firearms charges. All of the charges are felonies.
