Highly decorated Navy SEAL and Jesup chiropractor Dr. Howard Wasdin was killed in a plane crash Thursday morning near the William A. Zorn Airport in Jesup. He was 61.
Dr. Wasdin was reportedly on approach for a landing at the airport when the crash occurred. He and his dog were the only occupants of the plane and both did not survive.
Dr. Wasdin was the guest speaker at the Pierce County Chamber of Commerce’s annual gala in 2014. A highly decorated Navy SEAL and an author, Wasdin wrote a book entitled “SEAL Team Six: Memoirs of an Elite Navy SEAL Sniper.” The book was released the week the SEAL team killed Osama Bin Laden. Howard became a sought-after television commentator and motivational speaker. The book was on The New York Times bestseller for 22 weeks.
He was a top sniper with SEAL Team Six and honored for his actions in “Operation Gothic Serpent” in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1993, an operation dramatized in the movie Black Hawk Down.
Dr. Wasdin was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry and a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in action.
He was wounded three times in that conflict and nearly lost his right leg.
After discharge from the military, Dr. Wasdin started a successful chiropractic practice, Absolute Precision Chiropractic.
Funeral services are slated for 11 a.m. Saturday, April 15, at the Rinehart and Sons Chapel in Jesup.
