The “Sound of Silver” marching band struck the right notes to become Grand Champion of the Blue and Gray Invitational in Fitzgerald over the weekend.

“The band students were yelling and screaming after it was announced they had won the event and it continued until they got back to PCHS,” said Band Director Bob Edwards.

Band members were greeted by local police and escorted to the high school after the occasion. The prestigious honor was the first for Pierce County High School since 2007 when the band was tops at the Royal City Classic at Camden High School.

The “Sound of Silver” overcame a numbers disadvantage to captured the competition title as one of the smaller participating bands.

“Our band is not as large as some of these bands but we make up for it with precision marching, excellent music, interesting effects and hard work,” Edwards says.

The band is under the direction of Edwards, Mike Carter, and Heather Sweat.

In addition to receiving straight superiors for percussion, flags, dance, majorette (Jasmine Washington), flags, drum major (Macy Woodcock), and band, the PCHS group received the highest awards in these categories over all other competing bands.

More band excitement is ahead for PCHS. The school will host 23 bands from Georgia and Florida for the annual Sound of Silver Invitational Band Competition this Saturday.

The day of non-stop halftime action will begin at 10 a.m. and will conclude about 8 p.m. PCHS will perform an exhibition at 7:15 p.m. Admission is $5 for the day.

Bands scheduled to compete include: Albany, Appling, Brantley, Brooks, Brunswick, Calvary Day, Central, Charlton, Cook, Eagle’s Landing, Effingham, Emanuel Institute, Georgia Military Prep, Glynn Academy, Harris, Lanier, Lawton Chiles, McIntosh, Montgomery, Perry, Southeast Bulloch, Tattnall and Westside. A full schedule can be found at soundofsilver.org if you wish to see the performance time for a particular band.

Bands can perform for Festival (morning) or Competition (afternoon) or both and will be judged on musical performance, marching ability, and general effect.

“This is the fourth Invitational we’ve had and it is bigger and better than previous events. The Band Boosters have worked really hard to make this run smoothly and now we just need a large audience,” Edwards says. “Come out and support the PCHS band with your attendance.”

The week after the Sound of Silver Invitational, the PCHS band will compete at “The Battle of the Border” at Lowndes County High School.
